Riverside County pays $1.8 million to settle lawsuit over inmate beaten to death by cellmate at Indio jail

Riverside County agreed to pay $1.8 million to settle a federal lawsuit alleging sheriff's deputies failed to protect a 48-year-old detainee who was beaten to death by his cellmate, Luke Hanchette, at the John Benoit Detention Center in Indio.
